How to Attest Documents in Oman Through Oman Post
Document attestation in Oman is the official process used to confirm that a personal, educational or commercial document is genuine for an authority that needs to rely on it. The Foreign Ministry remains the attesting authority, but applications are no longer accepted at the Ministry’s Consular Department or its former attestation offices. The current customer route is Oman Post: apply online or use one of the selected branches.
Quick answer
Choose the document and the country where it will be used, complete any required earlier authentication in the issuing country, then apply through Oman Post’s official attestation platform or a listed branch. Upload or present the complete document, choose the available collection/delivery method and pay the fee shown for the document category. The Foreign Ministry performs the official attestation; Oman Post receives and handles the transaction. Do not go directly to a Foreign Ministry attestation office, because direct applications are no longer accepted.
Checked 30 August 2026: the Foreign Ministry pages were updated on 24 August 2026 in English and 26 August 2026 in Arabic. Oman Post’s public page describes online submission, selected branches, doorstep pickup, courier delivery, SMS updates and additional administrative services. It does not publish one guaranteed processing time for every document and route.
What document attestation does
Attestation verifies the authenticity of an official signature, seal or issuing chain so another authority can accept the document. It does not rewrite the document, correct its facts or decide the legal application that depends on it. A marriage certificate may support a residence application, for example, but attestation alone does not grant a visa. A degree may support an employment file, but attestation does not approve the job or professional licence.
The correct chain depends on where the document was issued and where it will be used. An Oman-issued document intended for use abroad may need a different sequence from a foreign-issued document intended for use in Oman. The destination authority, embassy or consulate can also impose an earlier or later legalisation step. Confirm that sequence before paying.
Who provides the service now?
The Foreign Ministry states that all document-attestation services are now provided through Oman Post, electronically or through selected branches. Oman Post is the designated intake and logistics partner; the Foreign Ministry remains the authority behind the attestation. This distinction helps applicants avoid two common errors: visiting a Ministry office that no longer accepts requests, or treating an unofficial courier as the attesting authority.
| Organisation | Current role | What the applicant does |
|---|---|---|
| Oman Foreign Ministry | Official attestation authority | Do not submit directly to its former attestation offices |
| Oman Post | Official application, handling and delivery channel | Apply online or at a selected branch |
| Issuing authority / foreign authority | May authenticate the document earlier in the chain | Complete the sequence required for the issuing country |
| Embassy or consulate | May have a role where the destination procedure requires it | Verify with the destination authority; do not assume every case is identical |
Who can apply?
The official service is available to Omani citizens, foreign residents, visitors, businesses and institutions. Individuals may use the electronic platform or, when necessary, a selected branch. Company and institution representatives and agents must also submit through Oman Post. A representative should be ready to show the authority required for that transaction; the public pages do not establish one universal power-of-attorney form for every case.
Documents commonly attested
The Ministry’s fee schedule covers personal, educational and business records. It includes marriage and divorce documents, study certificates, death certificates, non-conviction certificates, experience and employment certificates, ordinary powers of attorney, commercial agencies and contracts, certificates of origin, commercial invoices, commercial registration and other listed certificates.
Being named in the fee table does not mean a scan is automatically acceptable or that no earlier authentication is required. The document must be in the form required for its origin and intended use. If your document category is unclear, use the official platform’s current classification or ask Oman Post before selecting “other certificate”.
| Document group | Examples in the official schedule | Check before applying |
|---|---|---|
| Family and civil | Marriage, divorce, death and other civil certificates | Original/copy category, issuing authority and destination requirement |
| Education and work | Study, experience and employment certificates | Whether earlier education/employment authentication is required |
| Authority documents | Ordinary powers of attorney and replacement documents | Exact document type and whether an original or duplicate is submitted |
| Commercial | Agencies, contracts, certificates of origin, invoices and CR records | Original/duplicate, invoice value and representative authority |
Oman-issued documents for use abroad
Start with the authority that issued the document and the authority abroad that will receive it. Confirm whether the original, an official duplicate or a certified translation is required. Complete any prerequisite authentication specified for that document, then use Oman Post for the Foreign Ministry stage. After Oman’s attestation, the destination country may still require its embassy, consulate or domestic authority to complete the chain.
Do not assume that a document already used successfully in Oman is ready for another country. The receiving authority controls what it accepts. Ask it to identify the required chain in writing where possible, especially for education, court, company and family-status documents.
Foreign-issued documents for use in Oman
A foreign document normally begins in its country of issue. Depending on that country and document, the sequence can involve the issuing body, that country’s competent authority, an Omani mission, or the current electronic route available through Oman Post. The Foreign Ministry says electronic attestation has been activated across a growing list of countries, allowing applications without visiting an Omani embassy or consulate in those covered locations.
Coverage is phased and can change. Open the current Oman Post application and Foreign Ministry country list rather than relying on an old social-media graphic. If the country is not covered, ask the relevant Omani mission and the receiving Omani authority for the correct chain.
Educational certificates
Educational documents deserve an early check because the receiving employer, school, university or licensing body may ask for more than Foreign Ministry attestation. The official fee schedule currently lists an original study certificate and a duplicate at OMR 10 each. That fee does not prove that every transcript, degree or school report follows the same preliminary validation route.
Confirm the exact document name, issuing institution, original/copy requirement and whether a transcript, translation or additional education-authority step is needed. For a child’s admission, use the requirements in How to Register a Child for School in Oman; school registration remains a separate process. For employment, consult the employer and licensing body before using the Oman Work Visa Guide.
Marriage, birth and family documents
Family applications often rely on marriage, birth or relationship records, but the immigration service decides which documents it needs. The official attestation schedule lists marriage contracts at OMR 10 for the original and OMR 10 for a duplicate. Other certificates can fall under a different category, so do not select “marriage contract” for a birth certificate merely because both concern a family.
Attestation does not create sponsorship eligibility. Check the current immigration route in the Oman Family Joining Visa guide, then prepare the exact civil records that the live service asks for.
Commercial documents
Commercial fees vary substantially. The schedule lists an original commercial agency at OMR 60, an original commercial contract at OMR 40 and an original certificate of origin at OMR 20. Commercial-invoice fees rise with the invoice value: OMR 50 up to USD 10,000, OMR 70 above USD 10,000 to USD 50,000, OMR 100 above USD 50,000 to USD 100,000 and OMR 150 above USD 100,000. Duplicate invoice copies are listed at 50% of the original fee paid.
Companies should classify the document carefully and use an authorised representative. Attestation is not company formation or an operating permit. New founders should separately follow How to Start a Business in Oman; foreign-investment approval is explained in the Oman Investment Licence guide.
How to apply online through Oman Post
- Open the official Oman Post attestation page from the Foreign Ministry link.
- Create or sign in to the official account and choose the applicable application route.
- Select the document category and the issuing/use details requested by the live form.
- Upload clear, complete files in the accepted format. Do not crop signatures, seals, reverse pages or attachments.
- Review the document count, fee category, contact details and collection/delivery choice.
- Pay only through the official checkout and retain the transaction reference.
- Follow SMS or platform updates and provide the physical original if the process requests it.
- Check the returned attestation and document details before using it in the next procedure.
The live platform controls its accepted formats and fields. A successful upload is not a promise of approval: an incomplete chain, unclear scan, wrong category or document mismatch can still require correction.
Applying at a selected branch
The Foreign Ministry currently lists nine selected Oman Post branches: Airport Heights and Qurum in Muscat; Sur; Sohar; Nizwa; Central Salalah; Al Buraimi; Khasab; and Madha. The Ministry says individuals may use a branch when necessary, while agents and representatives of companies and institutions also submit through Oman Post.
Before travelling, verify current opening hours and service availability with Oman Post. Bring the complete document set and reliable identity/contact details. Do not assume that every ordinary post office provides attestation intake simply because it handles mail.
| Governorate/area | Selected branch listed by the Ministry | Planning note |
|---|---|---|
| Muscat | Airport Heights; Qurum | Confirm which branch/service mode suits the document |
| South Al Sharqiyah / North Al Batinah | Sur; Sohar | Check hours before travel |
| Al Dakhiliyah / Dhofar / Al Buraimi | Nizwa; Central Salalah; Al Buraimi | Use the current official branch details |
| Musandam | Khasab; Madha | Confirm availability for the intended transaction |
Pickup, delivery and tracking
Oman Post advertises doorstep pickup and courier delivery, a dropbox option at selected application centres, submission and collection on the applicant’s behalf, embassy/consulate legalisation support in Oman, SMS updates, photocopying and digitisation kiosks. These are service options, not automatic inclusions in every base attestation fee.
Use the choice displayed for your address and transaction. Keep the receipt and tracking reference separate from photographs of sensitive documents. If status does not change, contact Oman Post through its official channel; do not share an OTP or full document image with an unverified caller.
Current attestation fees
The official schedule is category-specific. The examples below are useful for planning, but the live application determines the category and any Oman Post administrative, pickup, delivery or value-added charge. Oman Post states that administrative fees apply to individual requests involving commercial and social documents from 18 February 2024.
| Example | Official attestation fee | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Study certificate — original or duplicate | OMR 10 | Check prerequisite authentication and exact education document |
| Marriage contract — original or duplicate | OMR 10 | Administrative/logistics charges may be separate |
| Divorce certificate — original | OMR 20 | Duplicate is listed at OMR 10 |
| Experience or employment certificate | OMR 10 | Listed in group two of other certificates |
| Commercial registration | OMR 30 | Company handling and representative requirements still apply |
| Other certificate — original/duplicate | OMR 30 | Provide details; do not use this category without checking |
How long does attestation take?
The reviewed official public pages do not publish one guaranteed end-to-end time for every document, country, branch and delivery option. Timing can depend on whether the prior authentication chain is complete, whether originals must move by courier, whether an embassy or consulate step is requested, the document count and whether clarification is needed.
Do not promise a same-day or fixed-number-of-days result based on a courier advertisement or another applicant’s case. Submit early, use the tracking reference and leave time before visa, school, employment, tender or travel deadlines.
Translations
An attestation does not automatically translate a document. Ask the receiving authority whether it requires Arabic, English or another language, whether the translation must be completed by a licensed translator and whether the original, translation or both must pass a specific authentication chain. Keep names, numbers and dates consistent across the original and translation.
Do not alter a scan or translate a seal yourself. If a translator flags an ambiguity, resolve it before attestation rather than submitting inconsistent versions.
Originals, copies and electronic documents
The fee table distinguishes originals and duplicates in several categories. A PDF marked “original” by an applicant is not necessarily an official original. Follow the live platform’s instructions and be prepared to supply the physical document or an issuer-verifiable electronic record when requested.
Upload every required page, including reverse pages or annexes where relevant. Avoid screenshots of document-viewer windows, compressed messaging-app images and cropped seals. Retain an untouched copy of everything submitted and compare the returned document before using it.
Common reasons a transaction needs correction
- The wrong document category or original/duplicate option was selected.
- The issuing-country authentication chain is incomplete.
- A scan is blurred, cropped, missing a page or inconsistent with the physical original.
- Names, dates or document numbers do not match the receiving application.
- A required translation or representative authority is missing.
- The applicant assumes attestation replaces the visa, school, company or professional approval.
- The destination authority requires an additional embassy, consular or domestic step.
Prepare the file before you submit
Read the document line by line before uploading or handing it over. Confirm that the holder’s name is written consistently with the passport or Resident Card used in the receiving application. Check the issuing date, document number, institution name, signature, seal and every attachment. If the reverse contains an endorsement, include it. If the document refers to a schedule or transcript, ask whether that accompanying record must travel with it.
Use a clean colour scan at a readable resolution and keep the page edges visible. Do not use photo filters, erase marks, combine pages in the wrong order or add a digital stamp of your own. A certified translation should remain distinguishable from the source document. Give each file a neutral filename that identifies its document type without exposing a passport number or other unnecessary personal data.
Before payment, compare the applicant’s name, phone number, delivery address, document count and category with the physical set. A simple category error can change the fee or require the request to be corrected. If you are sending an irreplaceable original, photograph its condition for your private records, package it as instructed and retain the collection receipt.
What to do if the application is returned or delayed
Read the official status or correction message inside the Oman Post account and identify the exact missing step. Do not open a payment or document-upload link from an unexpected message until it matches the transaction in your official account. If the issue concerns authentication in the issuing country, contact that competent authority or the relevant Omani mission rather than repeatedly resubmitting the same file.
If a name, date or number is wrong in the source document, ask the issuing authority how to correct it. Attestation cannot repair an incorrect source record. If the problem is a translation, return to the translator with both the original and the correction notice. Keep a written record of the resolution and do not alter an attested document after it is returned.
Attestation and related Oman procedures
Keep attestation separate from the service that will use the document. A work-visa application remains employer-led; a family application has its own eligibility and evidence; school admission depends on the school and education service; business formation and investment licensing have distinct approvals. Attestation only supports the authenticity layer.
After arrival, keep identity documents current through Oman Resident Card Renewal. An attested certificate does not extend a visa or Resident Card.
Security checklist
Use only the official Oman Post platform reached from the Foreign Ministry page. Never send an OTP, bank PIN, card CVV, PKI/Theqa PIN or unredacted identity document to a caller promising “express MFA approval”. No private intermediary can bypass the required authentication chain or guarantee acceptance by the destination authority.
- Type the official domain or follow the Ministry’s link.
- Check the document category and fee before paying.
- Keep the transaction and courier references.
- Verify unexpected payment or correction messages in the official account.
- Do not pay a personal bank account for an official service.
- Do not post attested documents or QR details publicly.

Frequently asked questions
Can I apply directly at the Foreign Ministry?
No. The Ministry says its Consular Department and attestation offices no longer accept these applications. Use Oman Post online or a selected branch.
Is Oman Post the authority that attests the document?
Oman Post is the official intake and handling partner. The Foreign Ministry remains the attestation authority.
Can residents and visitors apply?
Yes. The official page includes Omani citizens, foreign residents, visitors, businesses and institutions.
Is every attestation OMR 10?
No. Fees depend on the document category. Commercial documents can cost substantially more, and administrative/logistics charges may be separate.
Does attestation guarantee my visa or school admission?
No. It verifies authenticity; the receiving authority decides the separate application.
Can I submit a scan only?
The platform accepts uploads, but the process can still require a complete original or issuer-verifiable record. Follow the live instructions.
Is there a guaranteed processing time?
No single guaranteed time for every route was found on the reviewed official pages.
Do foreign documents use the same chain?
No universal chain applies. It depends on the issuing country, coverage of electronic attestation and the Omani authority that will receive it.
